Local Artist Paul Nixon
has been creating woodcarvings and sculptures for the last ten years, but his passion for woodworking began in his early childhood.  Born in Dublin, Ireland, Paul spent much of his early childhood in the mountains of western Ireland (County Sligo) where his family fostered his interest in Celtic mythology.  Surrounded by a family of carpenters and cabinetmakers, he became interested in woodworking at a very early age.  Paul's artistic abilities and this interest in working with wood developed even more during his extensive travel experiences throughout the next twenty years.
In 1997,Paul and his wife Francesca moved from New York to Greensboro and it was then that Paul’s ability to carve and sculpt wood flourished.  This new passion led him to take classes at GTCC where he soon became the teacher and has been passing on his secrets ever since.  He also began displaying his work at local galleries and won many awards at woodcarving shows throughout the state

Paul's first large scale commission in every sense was a 17 foot carved cedar totem pole depicting children playing and climbing among peace symbols and the word “Peace” carved in many different languages.  It stands outside Triangle Lake Elementary School in High Point, which has been designated an international peace site.  Local news coverage on TV as well as in local papers has led to increased exposure and multiple commissions.  Paul’s most recent work is a 6-foot bronze statue of a fully equipped firefighter with 2 children dedicated in October 2005 to the Greensboro Fire Department at Fire Station #1 on Church Street in Greensboro. In January 2006 Paul became a co-owner  to the new progressive Marshall Art Gallery in Greensboro where he continues to create sculpture locally and nationally.
